About Inside/Out Design
If there are three things that lend themselves to “starting a business and seeing what happens” it would be real estate sales, interior design, and contracting, not necessarily in that order.
So what sets the Lockers apart?
In Judy’s case (Inside/Out Design), it started with a childhood interest, then an Applied Arts major at Iowa State University, followed by an incubator interior design business in Minnesota while tending to 4 kids and a husband too often off playing sports supposedly to earn a living.
Sports led to a move from the Twin Cities to the Bay area, but Judy didn’t miss a beat. As the children grew, so did her interest in design … and her knowledge.
Being an independent thinker, working for someone did not appeal for long ... and Inside/Out was born around 1978 and has grown, not in size but in knowledge ever since.
The name gives a pretty good clue to the focus. California living is a combination of interiors and walking through the door and the rest of the reason people love the Bay Area.
So, while serving an ever faithful list of repeat clients, the real fun and enjoyment comes from taking on an annual involvement in “owner-builder” projects where the Lockers combined their talents to try ideas and break new ground.
This has resulted in 50 or more projects where Judy and Bob were included in ownership … with no-one to stymie the creative input. Some did not live up to expectations, but luckily most have, and have given us a chance to test leading edge ideas but with a ever present eye on timeless features and materials.
Here are a few of the Inside/Out Design, Locker Alliance, Agua Natural projects Judy has been an integral part of, involved in both the architecture and of course, the interior choices.
