We start this adventure in Arusha, Tanzania, not far from Mt Kilimanjaro. There we join up at Mt Meru Lodge with other members of our tented, game-viewing "Hemingway" Safari, conducted by Abercrombie & Kent. For the next two weeks, we camp and view game in conservation areas including Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and finally the legendary Serengeti. Africa is truly "The Greatest Show on Earth". From Tanzania, we travel on to Nairobi, Kenya and then to The Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.

I brought home 603 readable digital image files, stored on 32 floppies. The camera and floppies survived extreme conditions, including dust, vibration, heat, cold, and humidity -- from Amsterdam to East Africa and The Seychelles. I was diligent about keeping camera and media in a protective shoulder bag when not in use. The camera went through the airport baggage security machinery, but I always insisted on a hand-check of the floppy carrier pouch. Only 2 files out of 605 were damaged due to unknown reasons -- possibly surface defects in the media. The Mavica survived to serve us on our Camel Safari in India, where it suffered a lethal dose of sand from the Thar Desert.
