After a period of grief and depression following the death of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan began construction of this monument to love in 1632, which continued for 20 years and employed more than 20,000 laborers, craftsmen, and artists.
The Taj Mahal exterior is opulently adorned ...
... with semi-precious stone inlay and intricate relief-work on the macarana marble.
The Red Fort of Agra, within view of the Taj Mahal, served as an imperial Mughal residence. With the aging Shah Jahan's health in decline, his most ambitious son, Aurangzeb won out in the contest for power and imprisoned his father here.
Shah Jahan, confined but in comfortable quarters, lived out his
remaining 8 years in the Red Fort with his gaze fixed on the Taj Mahal, where he
too was finally buried beside his wife Mumtaz.
