Founded by feudal chief Rawal Jaisal in 1159, this ancient desert fort-city prospered as it levied the silk and spice caravans which passed through.

These stone balls could be rolled right off the wall onto the heads of would-be attackers.

We navigate through the old streets and find one of the merchant-class Havelis, mansions built of finely carved sandstone, and still in use after 300 years.

Cenotaphs on a hill across the city where we enjoy a fantastic sunset panorama of the old fort.

The fort's walls, with 99 turrets, encompass one-quarter the real estate of modern day Jaisalmer.  It's still occupied and very functional.

The next morning, we visit Garsisar, an artificial lake in which trapped rainwater once provided the water supply for the city of Jaisalmer.

Surrounded by shrines, it's a peaceful spot to freshen up with a wash in the morning.
