India - Camel Safari

Camel Safari in Rajasthan, India
November, 2000

Rajasthan, the "Abode of the Rajas", lies in north India with Pakistan to its west and India's capital, New Delhi, to its east.

Our "Camel Safari", organized by the American Museum of Natural History of New York, takes us through Rajasthan's natural and man-made wonders.  We traverse contrasting geographies, from woods and wetlands teeming with game to the arid plains and sand dunes of the Thar Desert.  We experience a wide range of accommodations, from a tent to a suite in a palace, and  modes of transportation, from train to bus, from elephant to camel.

We arrive and tour  New Delhi then travel south to Agra (of Taj Mahal fame) with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri.

Now in Rajasthan we visit the wildlife sanctuaries of Bharaptur and Ranthambhor, for bird, game, and tiger-watching.

Next we head to the "Pink-City" Jaipur and then west to the Great Camel Fair at Pushkar, culminating in the full-moon festival, Kartik Purnima.

From Pushkar, we set off for the Thar desert for our "real" Camel Safari in Osiyan.  We leave our tents and camel-saddles behind and move on the Golden City, Jaisalmer, and then back to Jodhpur.

Finally, I have some concluding remarks in Post Script.

Pictures were shot with a Sony Mavica FD7, in 640 x 480 pixel resolution, the same camera that served us well on the African Safari and in The Seychelles.  Unfortunately, in the last days of the trip, the camera began to display symptoms of imminent failure, probably owing to a dose of sand in the Thar Desert.
